Japan First Airport on Artificial Island

Kansai International Airport (KIA) Osaka, was the first airport in Japan ever built on artificial island. The airport was opened in September 1994 operating on a single 3,500m runway, capable of handling up to 160,000 departures and arrivals per annum. Link: Airport Technology

The second phase took over 10 years and consumed $ 13 million to complete. The new runway of 4,000m long will start operation in 2 August 2007. Total land area claimed for this second phase is 542 hectares. Link: Airport Technology,QQ
