
Kansai International Airport (KIA) Osaka, was the first airport in Japan ever built on artificial island. The airport was opened in September 1994 operating on a single 3,500m runway, capable of handling up to 160,000 departures and arrivals per annum. Link:

The second phase took over 10 years and consumed $ 13 million to complete. The new runway of 4,000m long will start operation in 2 August 2007. Total land area claimed for this second phase is 542 hectares. Link:
